Seaman Apprentice to Navy Wings of Gold

In this “Wings of Gold” book, the reader is taken from Don West’s stressful move from the home where he was born to a neighboring state for his senior year in high school. At first, it was difficult, but he chose to investigate military service while still in high school. After graduation, in l950, he went to boot camp, and the Korean War began. A U. S. Destroyer cruise from New Orleans to Cuba and Haiti followed boot camp. Upon his return home by train, he learned his family had moved back to Oklahoma City, so he traveled to rendezvous with them and began a four-year stint with the Army ROTC at the University of Oklahoma. Upon completion in 1954, he was determined to fly in the U. S. Navy. The war was over, and the opportunity came to begin flight school with the Navy. He followed through Preflight into Primary, Formation, Night Flying, Gunnery, and Carrier Landings.
